Review: Quite simply 2001:A Space Odyssey is one of the most beautiful films ever, a true work of art and an essential purchase for anybody who like sci-fi or film in general. The film revolves around the evolution or the "ascent" of man from our earliest beginnings to the next step beyond what we are today, all given a few nudges along by some mysterious monoliths. However, the subtle plot with its altogether Nietzschian overtones is only part of the picture, Stanley Kubricks/Arthur C Clarks(not just the author of the book he worked with Kubrick on the film) vision of the future from there world in the late 1960s is breathtaking. The cinematography is incredible, watch this DVD in a dark room on a good widescreen set up and the beauty of this film just washes over you and the famous sound track is perfect. This is cold hard Science fiction, films like Star Wars though set in space are more fantasy/action/adventure based really and even real sci-fi like star trek etc always seems to twist or just plain ignore the the laws of physics to get around a plot point. There is none of that here, the attention to detail is spotless down to the small things like the fact there is no sound in a vacuum, a mistake, deliberate or accidental made in almost every space film ever mad. Altogether this is a classic and this collectors pack includes the soundtrack on a separate CD and some nice stuff like a film frame with it, my only bad point is that there are no comentarys or documentarys on the DVD itself and a film of this caliber really merits some investment by the studio in that way, but still 5 stars all the way |
