Review: I am totally hooked on the previous version of this game (Ace Combat Shattered Skies), so I was delighted when this sequel, Ace Combat Squadron Leader came out for the Sony PlayStation 2 and ordered it immediately. I waited delivery with great anticipation and when it arrived a few days later, I had a go straight away, looking forward to hours of enjoyment and fun. After half an hour, I gave up. The game has been "Hollywoodized", trying too hard to be like Top Gun. I disliked the mission briefings, with its "let go kick ass" approach. Their is too much video content to watch, but at least that can be skipped over. During the missions their is a deluge of constant meaningless and boring chatter, and the worst part is that you sometimes have to reply a YES or a NO to a question, which adds nothing to the gaming experience and makes it plain annoying. There is no option to turn this feature off either. The first mission was excruciatingly boring because you are ordered to intercept an aircraft and not fire on it. So there you are, flying for 5 minutes, doing nothing! For new players this will probably be a good game, but for Shattered Skies veterans, its very disappointing. |
