Review: You've all seen the impact the iPod has made over the past few years. It's become "the" thing to have - and this isn't just luck. The iPods combination of excellent design and simple, straightforward navigation and software has always been a winner. Having owned a 3rd Gen model for 2 years, I decided it was time to upgrade (a shame Apple don't offer an upgrade option - but whatever...) and I wasn't disapointed. The biggest thing for me was battery life. Sure, it's prettyier. Yes, it also comes in black and red. And it is now colour. But none of that, when it comes down to it, really matters. For me, the iPod is for one thing only, listening to mp3s, and whether or not it can hold photos or play games is pretty much irrelivant to me. And I'm not at all disapointed. While it would have been nice to notice a little more focus on the actual mp3 playback capabilities from Apple in general, they haven't put a foot wrong. The music quality is crisp, clear and more powerful than the 3G model, and is easily the market leader. The only drawbacks with the new iPod is that Apple still pack those apauling white headphones, which seem to emit sound as much around them as through to the user. As well as this, Apple now only include a USB 2.0 cable and USB 2.0 A/C Adapter, rather than the faster Firewire cable / A/C Adapter. While this is probably due to outdated PC having hissy fits over the original Firewire stuff, it doesn't really make sense - why don't they have 2 seperate options? Overall, it's still the choice that makes sense for me. 15 hours of playback, the best sound quality availble, the best software availble (none of that "SonicStage" nonsense) and the best looks. Buy it. Buy it now. |
