Review: Jack Palance (Costa) is superb as a man - a real soldier - that his captain Eddie Albert, hamming it brilliantly, could never be. Many overtones on that theme alone, but the primary drama is the personal revenge journey as Costa, for the umpteenth time is betrayed by his captain to see his men cut down by the Nazis, and is determined to make it back. The final showdown is riveting, a great drama (no blockbuster this, just first class acting, directing and screenplay from the 50's) with universal themes of patronage, betrayal, and justice, that has not dated. |
