Review: From the creator of Rayman comes this ambitous and largely succesful tale of conspiracy and political intrigue Beyond Good & Evil. Set on the idyllic land of Hillys, playing as green-lipsticked Jade, you become ensnared in conspiracy and betrayal as you attempt to uncover the truth about the contorlling militrary force, the Alpha Section. Gameplay takes a variety of forms, most notably stealth and buttom mashing (otherwise known as 'fighting'), but also includes hovercraft racing and other mini-games. These are fairly well implemented, although you do feel the game is leading you through the story with kitten gloves, so progress is inevitable and inevitably unrewarding. Possebly the best aspect of the game is the graphical style, which is wholly original and always striking. Sadly, the gameplay resorts to a number of stock cliches, such as apparently identical boxes that are climbable in one room but not in another. I also take offense from the use of racial accents used in the cutscenes - a variety are used, but, predictably, the 'bad-guys' all have English accents (it's bad enough with Hollywood propagating this sort of prejudice about, but I though a French company would know better). Ultimately this is an enjoyable experience, if slightly uninvolving, but worth a purchase at its current low price. |
