Review: A 'Father & Son' story that must be dedicated to all the sons ever embarrassed by their dads. The acting is excellent: Albert Finney is as the larger than life character (he plays these parts so well), Ewan MacGregor's accent is a little awry in parts and Jessica Lange is rivetting as always. There's a number of well known actors in cameo roles. I was expecting more of a 'Burton' film than this- not that I was disappointed- it's just different that's all. It's a strange film.- fantasy based but with real social issues There's odd pointless whimsical bits, strange characters, not much substance at times and even a bit of slapstick (at which I even laughed!) It's a bit like a Terry Gilliam film at times- 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' maybe? On the other hand the 'emotional' bits left me cold until the end when it suddenly hit me. The way I read it was this: Each of us decides what we need to believe about life- the mundane truth or the interesting fantasy? also, it's what you've done with it. what you believe you've done with it. but most importantly it's what the people you leave behind believe you've done with it that matters I'll think twice about spinning yarns to my little girl in future. |
