Review: Brassed Off is still one of the greatest ever British films. Realism, great music and gritty northern humour, set against the backdrop of the miners' strikes of the Eighties combine to make this essential viewing. The message of how technological 'progress' is slowly making traditional manual labour obsolete, and the effect this has on everyday folk is as relevant and poignant in the new millennium as it ever was. But if you have no interest in the politics, just sit back and enjoy the wonderful performances of Stephen Tompkinson, Pete Postlethwaite and Ewan MacGregor. If this was made in America and starred Tom Hanks and Sean Penn this would have won Oscars by the armful. If you've never seen this film, do so now. If you've already seen it, then watch it again. As you probably gathered, I like this film. |
