Review: The Ixus i zoom feels like good kit should, its solid, well built and very easy to handle. Its small to hold, but just the right size for my normal hands, its about the size of the smaller nokia phones. The Ixus looks fantastic too, I have the Jet Black one, and its pretty enough for me not to get into trouble with my wife for buying yet another camera! The size of this camera makes it ideal to use on nights out, so what I need is a fast, accurate camera that takes good pictures in the dark. And whilst the view on the screen can be a little poor in the dark, the photo's that come out are great, just remember this small flash is really only good for 3 to 4 meters away. The camera switches on quickly, and has very little shutter lag, so you shouldn't miss the action. A useful feature is one of the function buttons can also be used as the shutter release when the camera is held vertically, making it ideal of one handed use. There are lots of settings you may never use, such as underwater and snow, as the auto settings works very well, but its good to know they are there the next time I'm underwater! (This camera is not waterproof without an extra case!!!) The optical zoom isn't huge, and other small cameras have more, but with a 5MP photo, I find there's always enough for you to edit the bits you want when you get home. The included remote does not seem to have a shutter release, so is for managing the camera when its in the included docking station only. The docking station is ok, it could look better, especially considering the effort made on the camera! Also note that there are no USB or battery charging ports on the camera, so picture transfer and charging needs to be done via the dock. This camera has the processing chips of the serious expensive cameras in Canon's range, so expect good results, even though the lens is small. In summary, an excellent camera you can carry around anywhere. The lack of manual focus, and the limited zoom means professionals and serious amateurs needn't be bothered with it, unless like me you are lucky enough to have a few cameras. Ideal for keeping with you all the time, and I'm pleased I bought it. |
