Review: Ordered my Canon Ixus 40 digital camera from Amazon (cheapest price I could find) with a Bytestor 512mb High Speed sd card (also recommended). Arrived in 36 hours.
Size is minute. Just smaller than a credit card and about 1 and a half centimetres thick. Seems significantly smaller side by side when compared to the old Ixus (e.g. 500) cameras.
Very solid build quality, all stainless steel, save for battery and usb cover which are plated plastic. Body seems to have a laquer on it, which does show scuff marks/ scratches in light.
Optical viewfinder. 2 inch screen is very clear.
Speed of camera is amazing. Lens pops out, switches between modes etc very quickly.
Video mode best I have seen on a camera. 30 fps VGA unlimited movies- so you can fill a 1gb sd card with a movie (apparently if you go above 1 gb, it will split it into 2.
Battery will last for a good day's shooting before requiring recharge.
Photo quality excellent for such a small camera. Yes, there is bound to be a trade off when you go this small, but in this camera it is minimal- a bit of purple fringing in certain shots (dark contrasting with light). Average user will not notice it. Apart from that they are sharp, nicely exposed with great colour and low noise.
Focuses quickly with the multii point focus system- much improved on older versions.
Low light focusing also works surprisingly well and the focus assist lamp/ red eye reducer seems a vast improvement on my old Powershot.
This camera has a real wow factor and I am sure you will not be disappointed if you buy.
One word of warning- the strap has a sharp plastic nodule on it (which is designed so you can slide it down to tighten it against your wrist), but it will scratch the camera and LCD screen when it rubs on it in your pocket. File/ snap this useless bit of plastic off the strap to keep your camera pristine.
