Review: Most new Canon models carry an extreme hype over their release and the Canon Ixus 50 digital camera is no exception. Formally released next week and boasting one of the smallest 5MP digi-cams on the market this has been a winner since I first used it. The size is one of the highlights with this camera, this all-metal build is small enough for any event; I've found it perfect for gigs where security is tight and you're trying to get a close up of Michael Stipe!
The print quality is superb, the pixel detail is near-perfect for home printing an excellent A3 and allowing you to indulge into bigger prints by the delivery of outstanding optical performance and corner-to-corner clarity. I'd recommend this camera to anyone looking for a simple yet highly compact, perfectly sized and easy to use digital.
The 2.0" LCD is a nice plus giving you strong and sharp image detail before shooting. The shutter-reaction time has developed from the ixus 40 and it's one of the only cameras I've yet to notice a time delay. In addition the ixus 50 has a very fast start up time; imperative for catching those one of moments. One of the biggest selling aspects compared to other cameras I've used is the movie-mode which once played with, leaves you wanting to catch your friends doing the strangest things on nights out as once it's uploaded onto your computer, provides the clearest memories. The night-mode allows for clear display which is an added bonus which many other brands do not advance on.
The software is easy to use and allows a photographer at any level to enhance their images with many extras.
The reason for the drop in the 5-star rating is simply: No case (which you can purchase for around £15) and you'll need a 256 at the very least (Get a Viking 256 for around £25 as model prices can set you back to £50!)
The generous 100mb canon photo-storage is a new idea I've found enabled me to share images with friends across the world and further illustrates that Canon remain at the forefront of image-based technology. MR iPod was 2004s must have. This is 2005's.
