Review: I got this Canon PowerShot A80 digital camera for Christmas 2003 from Amazon and am very pleased with it. I read a lot of reviews of this and other cameras before choosing this one. I like it because it offers lots of options including manual settings, but you can be taking pictures in seconds after the batteries are installed with AUTO mode selected. This model is not the lightest available - the fact that it takes 4 x AA batteries means that it won't really sit in a pocket without you noticing it. For me, the ease with which pictures can be taken, and the quality of the results over-rides this minor inconvenience. On smaller, lighter cameras, I have found that the controls are often awkward for [male] adult fingers. If I have a crticism, it is with the bundled software, but I suspect that this is common across most digital cameras. The ArcSoft Photo Impression is an updated version that allows easy creation of slide shows. One "neat" feature of the camera is Stitch Assist for taking panoramic pictures, which is easy and intuitive to use. My tip is that you should by a couple of good-sized Compact Flash memory cards. A 256MB card holds approximately 200 snaps at maximum resolution (my estimate - the camera creates a few small files of its own on the card that contain system settings). And to save the life of the camera batteries, get a Compact Flash memory USB card reader for your PC (I bought a BELKIN which reads 4 types of memory card). You can then use CF cards to transfer other data too. |
