Review: This Canon Powershot S70 digital camera is a superb 'pocket' camera which produces clear, clean, high resolution images with a minimum of difficulty. It has a full Auto mode with intelligent 9-point AF but the user can get as 'manual' as they desire via various program modes on the SLR style selector dial. It even has a full manual focus mode with a split screen focussing view. The build quality is excellent and the unit feels metallic and rugged (it's quite heavy), just don't drop it on the lens assembly or there'll be expensive trouble. The lens retracts into the body when not in use and is covered by a metal sliding front plate so it's safe in your bag or pocket. Image storage is fast as is retrieval, although the USB interface is type 1 (naughty Canon!). The only downside is power consumption (buy a spare battery) and slight purple fringing at the widest angle of the (tiny) lens. This camera easily outperforms my 3 year old Olympus E10 SLR and produces very high quality images indeed. Recommended if you don't want a full SLR or can't stretch to one (or need a compact spare camera as do I). |
