Review: Paul McGann is the only reason for the 2 star rating. He has the potential of a good doctor (and his audio portrayal seems to validate that) but in this watered down TV movie, he is like any other tragic romantic hero that populate tv-land. Given a biggish budget, the sfx is obviously better, too bad the same can't be said for the script or the "creative" choices made. The producer seem to have a motto if "if in doubt, make it grand." Both the orchestrated score (gimme me Deliha Derbyshire's pioneering work anyday) and the Wellsian/Captian Nemo-esque Tardis are contradiction to the series spirit. Both of the above should retained the series' starkness, not overindulge in baroque excess. Also, reviving from death the two characters seem highly uncharacteristic for the doctor as well -- or else we'd still be stuck with Perri or god forbid, Adric! Stripped of the series eccentricity, it became a bland hybrid of au courant sci-fi cliches with a politically correct cast and a predictable story. The whole thing feels like it was produced by a committe and looks more like a precursor to those failed "reimagined" movies like The Avengers, League of extrordinary Gentlemen and Time Machine than a continuation of original series. |
