Review: really liked the look of this Ellion DVR 530S dvd recorder but ended up having to send it back to amazon because of various problems with it. for a start you need to be wary of buying this if you intend to use it for sky or some other digital input eg freeview, sky+, cable, especially in rgb mode. if you want to record the programme in full quality rgb mode (like you view programmes on sky in rgb) then this SHOULD be fine as the ellion does rgb in (scart 2)... BUT the ellion adjusts the screen brightness and makes it look washed out. one remedy regarding sky is to go into the settings and reduce the contrast in there to low. but this should not be required and means the picture is far from perfect. another problem is that for rgb passthrough (eg watching sky through the dvd recorder, especially for those with only 1 scart/ rgb scart on the tv) the ellion needs to be switched on. furthermore, when having just watched a dvd or changed channels then going back to sky (or other source) through the ellion, the 'AV in' button needs to be pressed 5 times to get to the scart input channel, with the standard av cable in, dv in and rf in etc taking precedence on the selction, to view attached sources/ devices. this is a relatively minor problem but very annoying for everyday use. the machine did lock up on a couple of occasions and mess one disc up but i guess this can happen. the main concerns are with those who want to record sky/ sky+ and the like. really difficult to recommend when the panasonic dmr-es10 (highly rated machine) is available for a similar price from amazon and others. |
