Review Summary: After 2 months ownership....

Review: I have been the proud owner of a DVR-530S DVD recorder for 2 months now.
After many long nights surfing the net looking at various different manufacturers recorders, I ended up going for the DVR-530S.

The main reasons that I chose the Ellion unit are..

Excellent connectivity.
Stunning good "Retro" looks.
Its "slim line" design (much smaller than many of the VCR sized unit around!)
Its great price.

What more could I ask for?

The first thing I would advise to anybody who has one, or is looking to buy one of these units is to upgrade the firmware to the latest version from the www.EllionDigital.com website. This I found the update cured some minor niggle's that I had with the unit in the early days.

To find out what version of firmware is currently installed on the recorder, you need to have no disc in the draw, bring the unit out of standby and the Press the AV IN button twice, then the Angle Button four times and then press the Enter Button. You should see an information box that display various information about the recorder including F/W LPS01UK**-****,*** (* = This varies dependant on the firmware version installed) the latest version that I have installed is F/W LPS201UK680B-V3FG,R:2 .

This upgrade I found turned off the "Blue Donut Light" (The wife's words not mine!) when the unit is put into standby mode. I found that the newer firmware also helped with the occasional erratic timer recordings and some post processing problems the recorder was having.

I had some worrying problems with cheaper media discs in this recorder, but found that a friend's recorder (a different brand) also would not accept these discs, so I guess that cheap media is best avoided on all DVD recorders.

Overall, the Ellion surprised me with it picture and sound quality, even when using the lowest quality settings the results are superior to that what my now redundant VCR produced.

In short the DVR-530S in my view is a cracking recorder, it looks great and does all that I would expect and more from budget priced unit. It gets even better when unit can also be easily made multi-region by pressing 7, 7, 0 without a disc in the draw!!!!

Superb...
