Review: Having read numerous reviews of various different brands and models before deciding on this Ellion DVR-535S dvd recorder, it became obvious that the world of budget DVD-recorders is very hit and miss. Whichever one I chose would be a bit of a gamble, it seemed.... So far, the fears I had about this have been unfounded. I've only had it for a few days but have given it a thorough testing and have not experienced any of the problems with the player which have been reported on other forums e.g. timer record function not working, player freezing, etc. However, pretty much the first thing I did on set-up was to upgrade the firmware. I'd read that this fixes many of the bugs in the earlier firmware version. This firmware is available to download at the Ellion website, and there are instructions on how to go about it in case you're not very technical. I've also read that there is another reliable version of the firmware available on the H&B website, as their DRX-430 is exactly the same machine as the Ellion, just with a different badge. This version is slightly more recent than the one on the Ellion site and I will try it out if I start experiencing any problems. I suspect the ratio of good reviews to bad is somewhat misrepresentative - people are more likely to write a review if they've had a bad experience, hence the number of such reviews of various budget DVD-recorders on the Amazon site. Or, perhaps I just got lucky and avoided a dud, or maybe Ellion have worked hard at fixing the previous bugs. I've given it 4 stars just to avoid tempting fate! But, I'd say buy this if you can't afford a top-range model. The picture is great, audio is great, and you can make it multi-region with the input of a simple code on the remote. Be sure to upgrade the firmware - just to be on the safe side - and you should be fine with this Ellion DVR-535S dvd recorder! |
