Review: Considering the price of the Ellion DVR-535S dvd recorder, it really is shockingly good value for money, which is why it gets the 5 stars.

First of all the picture quality and recording quality, assuming you use SCART or better cables, is very clear and if like most people this is your first experience of DVD recorders, you'll be surprised at the large transistion in quality from VHS.
Next is the build quality, the connections all seem top notch and you'll know straight away that money has been put into ensuring this machine is going to last.
All the features you can possibly want and more come as standard with the machine, plus the multiregion compatability and even better you can hook up an old or digital camcorder, or even a USB stick, and watch or record straight off them.
My favorite aspect is actually rather miniscule but the superbly-fascinating blue light that the machine emits when it's on is more mesmirising than the dvd you're watching, and it turns red with a glow akin to devilry when recording.
My only criticism is that of a flimsy plastic used for the front panel (to access additional ports).

The conclusion? This is nothing short of a seriously spiffingly good dvd recorder.

As a helpful hint:
You may find that if you connect this dvd player to your digital reciever (in my case: telewest box), that the AV channel is snatched by the dvd recorder when you turn it off, leaving you with no digital unless you watch it through the dvd recorder.

My solution is to use the following connection sequence, may work for other digital boxes:
In the back of the TV, you want one SCART cable going from AV1 to the 'TV' or 'Output 1' of your Telewest box. And also from the back of the TV, another SCART cable going from AV2 to the 'TV Output' of the DVD recorder.
From the back of the Telewest box, there should be a 'TV' or 'Out' round connection (next to 'aerial' or 'In') that you can fit an RF cable into, lead this from the telewest box to the 'In' port on the back of the dvd recorder. If your Telewest box has those multi-coloured connections (red, white, yellow) then use those instead of the RF cable as the former is unfortunately poor quality, but the Telewest box is very limited and rather ancient.
If you want to connect up a video recorder, put a SCART from the Euro2 at the back of the DVD recorder to the video recorder and pray.
This method should allow the TV itself can choose Telewest box or DVD Recorder as the Telewest box seems unreliable at this most mandatory of tasks! If your TV isn't too ancient, it should automatically goto AV1 as default, so showing your Telewest screen as you'd expect. Then when you switch on the DVD recorder from standby, the TV will automatically goto AV2, which if you remember is the dvd recorder, and when you switch if off it reverts to AV1, etc, convenient!
