Review: 'Evita' is the exception to the general rule that all Madonna films are bad. Since this film is a direct adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, complete with most of the old songs plus a couple of new ones, Madonna gets to sing and dance as well as acting, so she has several chances to convince us to admire her. She plays the Evita of the title: Eva Peron, the poor girl turned president's wife who became an icon in her homeland of Argentina. As an actress Madonna has all the gritty ambition to pull off this sort of role with glee, and it's fun to watch her rise to glory (taking a number of wildly different lovers on the way... the stuffy Jonathan Pryce (her screen husband), the smoldering Antonio Banderas (who also acts as the film's narrator, and also... Jimmy Nail!). For a musical (urgh), 'Evita' isn't bad at all. |
