Review: Final Fantasy X-2 Platinum is a decent sequel. The problem being that it is a sequel - if Square had made a game with new backgrounds and characters, it would be a lot more solid. The first and major problem with this game is that it re-uses Final Fantasy X's backgrounds, and enemies. This makes the game lack playability once you've reached the third chapter. There are various new dungeons, but overall, offer very little. If you have played Final Fantasy X religiously, it also makes for boring gaming - also, the fact you must replay the game a few times (unless you use a guide) to get the perfect ending, it can get old. Very quick. The addition of Paine is quite good; Yuna and Rikku are quite one sided personality wise, so haven't changed much. Relief comes from Paine at least for a while, until her routine also becomes boring and transparent. That's the serious side out of the way. Overall the game is quite fun; the battles are fast paced, and because of this they are reported to be used in FF12. The jobs are quite cool - visually, as well and their moves, but they can be quite limited. For instance, a lot of the jobs have many moves and attacks, but they are rarely if at all needed. It's likely you will only have three or so jobs you alternate with on a useful basis, but will probably stick to one and keep it. The battles don't offer a need to change jobs, unlike Final Fantasy X which gave the enemies various attributes certain moves needed to be destroyed easier. There is little challenge, too, so you mostly play the game for it's fluffy nature - the exception being a 100 level dungeon, that is repetitive and boring. The battles offer very little to stimulate and the storyline is quite weak. It's worth playing this game for fun, but keep in mind the backgrounds, as well as side quests, are very limited. Also the storyline is very light, so don't expect to be pulled in or moved. It's interesting, mostly, to see what Square make of the changes they made to the game; a PS2 FF Tactics, perhaps? A faster paced battle system (also a more challenging, hopefully, and somewhat fun/thought inducing) could make a decent, if not great FF title - with a larger selection of jobs, such as Ninja, Geomancer, Archer, as well as characters, and a darker nature would make the most out of the system. Overall, play if you want a fun, non taxing game. Don't rely heavily on replay value though - there's very little, even for the perfect ending. |
