Review: Er am aware that some people have complained that Region 1 versions is far superior to Region 2. You get a lot more for your money for a start, also much cheaper too. Still, having said that, these classics are still worth having. These two classics have certainly stood the test of time though. Digitally remastered, they will enhance any Home Cinema set up, with decent picture and adequate sound! Blimey, these movies are 70 years old for heavens sake!!! Universal set off a trend in movie making in those days which has never been surpassed taking into account modern so called monster movies like Van Helsing are all effects but no body and soul which these classics still possess after all these years. Of the two Frankenstein movies, The Bride of Frankenstein is the better. Quite simply, it has everything; dark humour; wonderful set pieces; a fabulous movie score by Franz Waxman, and of course the lovely Elsa Lanchester as the Bride! Er, did I say lovely? Actually Elsa is quite superb in this movie. Also, one must not forget Boris Karloff's sympathetic performance as the Monster desperately trying to make some sense of his life, and to find genuine friends, only to be rejected by the Bride in the astonishing final sequence, which will never be surpassed. If you can purchase the Region 1, go for it though, better value. |
