Review: This DEVO wind up DAB radio makes a brilliant sound from its single speaker. The DAB quality is fantastic. (I also have a Roberts DAB radio which vibrates awfully when playing a 64kpbs signal at any volume.) If you mainly listen to spoken word radio -- e.g. Radio 4 -- then you really don't need stereo, and this could well be the portable DAB radio for you.
But the real down-side is the life of the internal rechargeable battery. If you've tried to demonstrate this radio to yourself in a department store by winding it up, you'll know it's hopeless. Three minutes winding gives it just about enough charge to find a few stations, but you never get to hear what they sound like before the charge expires.
So the only way to charge this radio is via the mains. I don't believe I have mistreated this machine, but after three months, it just refuses to charge at all. So in our house, it has simply become another mains-connected DAB radio, albeit with a superb sound.
You may set out with the idea of taking this on your next camping trip, but I'm afraid that once in the tent, you'll get almost no life out of this thing. So it's back to the bonking again. |
