Review: This Fuji FinePix A120 is my first digital camera, and so far I'm impressed. It is pretty small - not so small as some of the ultra-compact ones, but a lot cheaper than something like the Exilim, and it easily fits into a jacket pocket. The image quality is good - 3M pixels is fine for most uses, and it performs well in the sort of shot I like, such as moodily lit evening skies. It also does do well in low light, so long as the subject is not moving, and you can hold it steady enough: The shutter speed is automatic, and indoors, without flash, the camera tends to set it to to 1/2 second, so you need a tripod or something to rest on. The camera does offer manual control over white balance and exposure compensation, but since these are accessed through menus rather than dedicated controls it will be best for people who are mainly going to use it on automatic. The manufactures and retailers seem to be a bit reluctant to tell you about the camera's compatibility with Macs. It comes bundled with software for OS X (10.2.6 - 3.1) and 9.2.2, though for basic use this is not needed. The camera is recognised by iPhoto as "USB mass storage" and photos can be imported into the library with one click. The one feature that is not supported for Macs is the web-cam mode, which is available only for Windows XP. A little warning: careful reading of the manual will tell you only to delete images through the camera's menu rather than on your PC. Pay attention to this - if you send the files to trash on the PC, they appear to be deleted but the storage is not released and you have to reformat the card to use it again. |
