Review: I'm now about 95% through my Amazon bought copy of Toby Gard's long awaited Galleon. Magazine reviews have been mixed but from those posted here you would think the game is the best thing in its genre on the XBox. Fact is, it isn't. I can say with personal knowledge that Prince of Persia, Beyond Good and Evil and, in particular, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (the closest thing to it in style and execution) are all better games in most respects. Galleon's has been so long in its development, swapping between platforms along the way that it does show. The graphics have obviously been tweaked for the XBox so they're certainly not shoddy but they are highly reminiscent of look of many (old) Dreamcast games. The character animation likewise. There is nothing wrong with this but if you're expecting to be amazed, you won't be. There's no time to fully discuss this game, it would take too long to detail it's flaws and it's undoubted triumphs. What you want to know is if it's worth playing. The answer is a qualified: yes. If you're an action/adventure game or Tomb Raider fan, disappointed with Angel of Darkness, and have played those other games I mentioned I'd whole heartedly recommend it. You will not enjoy some aspects but over all there are more things to like than hate. For others, I'd say approach with caution. Galleon is not going to convince anyone that this is the way forward for this type of game. It's original, in places, well presented, occasionally amusing and certainly well designed. But its lacks style, much is very familiar and, you really can't avoid the term: old fashioned. I happen to like old fashioned but I know many people who will dislike this game because of it. |
