Review Summary: OUT OF THIS WORLD...

Review: I must admit, when Halo first came to my attention, I wasn't that excited: "Just another FPS trying to be Half-Life", I thought. So when I finally got my X-Box home last week and put the Halo disc in the driver, I was totally unprepared for what followed. As I say, I am not a big FPS fan, because they are usually such shallow playing experiences... but not Halo. The story is nothing new, but it's the way it plays out and the atmosphere the game creates that are so amazing. The AI is incredible, beyond that of any game I've ever played - both friends and enemies react convincingly, assisting each other, using cover and retreating when appropriate. The graphics are superb, but it's the sound that really shines - the distant rumble of gunfire and cries for help that echo through the ship's corridors in mission 1, for instance. Even the brief training session takes place completely within the storyline: nothing breaks your focus, no loading screens during missions - it all draws you deeper into the game world. Early in the 2nd mission, I was crouching behind a rock, trying to escape from a Covenant dropship... and I genuinely felt afraid of detection. That's when I realised that Halo is not just a game, but an EXPERIENCE... and one of the finest ever produced, at that. If you have an X-Box, you MUST get this, no matter what your usual attitude to the FPS genre. I really cannot praise it highly enough.
