Review: High Noon's genius is all in the build-up - Gary Cooper as Marshall Will Kane deciding to stay in town to meet his nemesis, and slowly coming to realise that none of the townsfolk will help him in his stand makes for an incredibly tense film - throughout we are reminded that the clock is ticking ever nearer to the bad guys arrival, and the seemingly inevitable death of the Marshall. Wisely the film doesn't offer up any easy answers - many of the townsfolk offer up good reasons why the Marshall should just get out of town and save his life, but Kane knows that no matter how far he runs he'll have to make a stand somewhere. The film is well shot, and all the actors are fantastic - the only slight downside is the final shootout - after all this build-up it's a little disappointing to find that the final gunfight is so brief, and while Kane's final disposal of his badge (very reminiscent of Eastwood's Dirty Harry) is a nice touch, the sudden ending is a bit jarring. Still, a good intelligent cynical Western. |
