Review: Every year I sit down to watch 'Its a Wonderful Life' at Christmas and every year I start blubbing earlier and earlier. This year I probably wont even get the DVD in the player before I start.
It is the simple tale of a good man - George Bailey (played to perfection by James Stewart). His greatest wish in life is to leave his home town of Bedford Falls and travel the world. He has watched his father slave away in a small office in the town for most of his life and doesnt want to follow the same path.
The problem for George is that he always sacrifices himself for the greater good and hasnt a selfish bone in his body. As a result he never leaves Bedford Falls and spends his life helping others.
This comes to head one day when George is faced with bancruptcy and humiliation, through no fault of his own and thinks of taking his own life.
George is being watched over, however and his Guardian Angel (Clarence) is sent down to show him life as it would have been if he had never been born.
Its an age old story, a twist on 'A Christmas Carol' but it is so perfectly told its impossible not to love it.
Through the eyes of Clarence, George sees life as it would have been without him and all the people he has helped over the years suffer because he wasnt there to help. Naturally this vision is what saves George.
The final is truly magic with warmth and humour that you just dont get in films anymore.
The whole cast is fantastic with Donna Reid lovely as Georges wife and Lionel Barrymore as the evil miser Mr Potter.
Of course if youve seen it a hundred times as I have youll know all this already. If not, you are in for a real treat - just dont forget the hankie.
