Review Summary: Jak and Daxter... how to write a game that won't annoy
Overall Score: 5/5 Overall score - 5Overall score - 5
Review: Congratulations to Naughty Dogon Jak & Daxter. Whatever others might think about the game being a clone of N64 platform games (I can't speak from experience), Jak and Daxter was the most enjoyable game I've played on PSOne or PS2. If you've tried and enjoyed the Crash Bandicoot games, you'll see the similarities (same controls, same character actions, same boxes to jump on)... but you'll love the fact that this game does away with all the annoying features. To list just a few: NO load delays whatsoever; NO having to start levels from scratch when you die; NO getting stuck on something and not being able to continue. The whole gameplay is beautifully thought out. You can generally try levels in any order if you get stuck on one, and they're contiguous (so no going back to the "Warp Room" each time). It's a game that doesn't seem to want you to die... if you miss a jump, there's a fair chance you'll just grap the cliff with your fingertips and be able to pull yourself up. Once you've got a power cell, orb, or whatever, you've got it for good even if you die. It's very addictive, and yes, it only took about 4 days of solid playing to complete, but I reckon this was money well spent. It's not all about box-crushing and it's full of humour... where else would you have to herd cows - that moo plaintively when you hit them! - into a pen? My one (trivial) complaint: it really needs a map screen... it's very easy to get lost in some of the bigger levels. Highly recommended.
