Review: Jak and Daxter (Platinum) is, by all accounts, a fantastic 3D platform game. Not that it does anything revolutionary, but just because it is so solid and complete, that it feels like a masterpiece that cannot be faulted in any way. Set in a huge world, you travel around different areas seamlessly. There are no loading screens to endure as it loads as you play, creating a believable environment. The graphics are some of the best yet seen on the PS2, they are superbly well-done, cartoony style, and very smooth and fluid. The character voices are great, and perfectly synched to the characters actions. Using just a few moves, including a punch attack, and a spinning attack, you play as Jak, and his sidekick Daxter (who has been turned into a weasel-type creature), as you embark on a journey to gather power cells. These will open up new areas of the game when you have enough of them. It's a very enjoyable game, that can be played in either short or long bursts, and although the game's mechanics are pretty basic (jump, run, punch, spin), the world in which it is set, and the tasks to be completed make it seem fairly epic. You can also gain temporary skills by collecting different types of "Eco" (a kind of living planet energy) that will make you run faster or shoot energy balls. These are often essential for progression and will be placed in appropriate places. To describe this game as similar to Crash Bandicoot would be fairly close to the truth, however, the developers have taken a good formula like Crash, and mixed it with an epic adventure and huge world, to create something that is far more than Crash Bandicoot ever was, and probably ever will be. |
