Review: I, along with many other Tomb Raider fans, was salivating to get my hands on Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness on the Sony PlayStation 2. The release date was pushed back and pushed back; the eagerness grew; at last it arrived and there was an almighty...huh... There are many little problems that could easily have been forgiven: random bugs; no controller options; nice ideas had, but not necessarily bothered with (I speak of course of the RPG element that takes up all of 30% of the game). There is also much to rejoice. Lara looks and moves better than ever, the character progression adds a nice element of difficulty and there's much fun to be had in the sprint-to-leap - when eventually you get it. Sadly the player camera is abismal, there are a hundred weapons to choose from - 98 of which are useless - it took less than a week to finish and the controls are pathetic; a particular travesty as Tomb Raider had the best control set-up of any game of its type ever, and throughout the series just got better and better...until now. Tomb Raider Chronicles was a fine swansong on the PS1, and this makes me wish it had been its swansong FULLSTOP. |
