Review: The Lite-on LVW-5045 is an excellent piece of home video equipment. Recording TV programs on the hard drive in SP is as good as VHS quality. Recording from a camcorder to the hard drive in HQ via the front Firewire socket gives a superb result. Editing recordings on the hard drive requires some concentration but the system works. Sections of video can be hidden so that they do not appear on playback but the hidden parts are not removed and would be copied to DVD. To erase a section of recorded video it is necessary to split the section out of the main film, resulting in parts a, b and c. Then part b can be erased from the HDD and parts a and c can be merged together into one film. Copying from HDD to DVD is very straightforward. A one-hour film takes about 20 minutes to copy in HQ format.
Initially I had a problem with the TV picture rolling sideways when the 5045 was on standby. This was cured by re-tuning the TV with its autotune.
My only regret is that the 5045 does not have an integrated digital tuner for Freeview. However, a separate digi-box can be connected via scart and Freeview channels can be recorded to HDD or DVD. The remote control has sensitive buttons that need only a light single touch. A prolonged press sometimes results in the desired action being undone (ie interpreted by the system as two presses).
The 5045 has been on the market for some months now and I think Lite-on have had time to cure the problems mentioned in some earlier reviews. All in all, this Lite-on 5045 DVD recorder is a very satisfactory addition to one's home video equipment and is recommended.
