Review: I bought this Lite-on LVW 5006 DVD recorder mid December 2005. Seemed fine at first. Then I would record something and could not subsequently read the DVD at all. These were good quality Verbatim -R. After wasting a lot of disks and time (I am trying to copy some old VHS to dvd) I recorded to some el cheapo Navatech DVD-Rs - these seemed to be fine (although I haven't managed to check them all). On playing back the first recordings I had made, which I had finalised and appeared fine, I discovered that most of these failed at some point. This was particularly upsetting as I had since got rid of the original video recordings. I downloaded the latest firmware update from the website - my recorder would not recognise this - it just said 'data disk'. At this point I first called Liteon who said they would send me a copy of the firmware update - they did not recommend the consumer does it themselves! I have done marginally better with recording after buying Phillips DVD+Rs (reccommended on the compatibility chart on the website) but still have problems. I purchased this recorder particularly because of the AllWrite technology - however, this was not worth the extra money as so few disks are on their compatibility list - certainly none I already possessed. After 3 more phone calls to Liteon they finally told me there was a problem with the laser that needed repair. Having wsted an inordinate amount of time and some little money trying to get this working correctly I finally gave up. I took the recorder back to Argos and exchanged it for a 5115hc (+£20) - they won't refund - and won't even exchange unless you have a reference from Liteon. I will reserve judgement on the 5115 at present. As regards the picture and sound quality on the 5006 I had no problem. DVD+R disks only went wrong occasionally (but still too often). My experience of this model has caused me a lot of grief, but I appreciate that others have no or little problems. It appears to be a bit of a lottery. |
