Review: I bought this Lite-on LVW 5006 dual format DVD recorder with some trepidation having read some of the negative reviews of this unit and of those carried by the major stores, plus my terrible experience with Philips DVD recorders. I VERY carefully unpacked the unit, fully expecting to have to return it. 1) The unit is well packaged and arrived undamaged. 2) The manual is pretty good, a lot better than those for my JVC DVD player and VCR, and much better than my previous Philips unit. 3) Setting up was fairly easy - the auto channel tuner found the 5 channels plus a few from neighbouring transmitters - I had to manually remove them. I did not need the fine tune option. 4) I inserted a new Maxell DVD +RW disc and pressed record. You can hear the fan but I'd not describe it as 'noisy'. Recording from the TV and from the Scart source was easy. I was soon able to compile a test disc, using the different quality settings. The standard 5kpbs setting (2 hours) is of very very good. I have a new TV, and could see no degredation of colour. My first disc played easily in my esisting DVD player, a pretty naff unit, and it also plays in my son's Sony PS2, and in my PC. The manual says that the long play (3 hour) option is half the horizontal resolution (a bit like SVCD) but is fine for recording TV programmes. I recorded a 3 hour film from Cable TV, and was amazed by the quality on viewing the next night. I've not yet tried to record CDs either for music or SVCD discs. 5) Editing is a little tedious, but it is possible to change title names, and to delete a title. I've now had the unit 2 weeks, and have copied all our VHS tapes; the VCR is gone, and good riddance. |
