Review Summary: Use 2 and convert to/from NTSC

Review: Assuming that your TV can cope with NTSC input (most modern PAL ones can), then you can switch the OUTPUT of your 5006 to NTSC.

At this point, a new DVD inserted will format and record to NTSC standards. If you have a 2nd one of these then you can either leave it set at PAL, in which case you will lose the bottom of the pic as NTSC has less lines, or you can also set that to NTSC.

Connecting the 2 units via RGB SCART it is then possible to play back your PAL DVD in the 1st unit and record an NTSC version of it on the other one! I have verified this on my units with discs sent to friends in the US. There is a slight colour cast in the conversion, not so obvious in the PAL to NTSC option - but then you lose the bottom of the pic, but that's nothing new with NTSC (Never Twice Same Colour!)

It works for VCD and SVCD too. So, it is possible to take footage from your PAL DV camcorder, record it onto the 1st unit, set to PAL - it won't let you record PAL to NTSC over the Firewire link, change both units to NTSC, insert another disc in the 2nd and translate your footage to NTSC. Of course, if you don't want an initial copy in PAL then you can record that one to a + or - RW and reuse that disc afterwards!

My units are a few months old but I hope it still works for everyone. The only real problem is having 2 units that both react to the same remote!! Takes some careful positioning of the units and angling of the remote!

Both units have proved reliable, taking all sorts of discs without problems, but a bit quirky and iffy when recording off TV, especially on timeshift, hence only a 4* rating.
