Review: As a huge fan of Frontline I've been looking forward to this release for ages. Sadly the game is a bit of a letdown. Although the atmosphere is still set really well, the level design is generally pretty poor. The (very) linear nature of the game is badly suited to trying to recreate jungle warfare - it all feels a little bit silly - much like the 'Rough Landing' mission on Frontline did, with its arbitrary path cut through the Dutch countryside.
The main problem, however, is that it is much too easy, even on the hardest difficulty setting. There's an over-generous supply of medikits, and most bad guys can be picked off in ones and twos - there are only a few moments where you do get pinned down from several angles and it gets really tense.
There are some really nice set pieces - the night mission in Guadalcanal is pretty tense the first time you play it, and the charge up the hill through the kunai grass (straight out of the Thin Red Line) is excellent. I just feel there's too much filler in there, of the "walk up to the corner, pop round and shoot the next guy" type.
EA have tried to expand the amount of time you spend fighting with other soldiers, and there are some fun chaotic several-a-side battles, especially the ambush in Guadalcanal. Sadly the AI of these guys is ludicrously bad, and they spend half their time running around blindly, usually right in front of your line of sight. It's also enormously frustrating to sneak up on the bad guys really carefully, only to have your sneaky ambush blown by an idiot marine who charges past you, to no good effect.
Whilst I quite often replayed a level or two of Frontline, I can't see myself going back to this often. Unless you're a real MOH freak, I wouldn't buy it. If you've got a spare weekend rent it, beat it, and take it back.
