Review: Mercenaries Playground of Destruction is a game based on a truly great idea: GTA in a warzone. You can imagine the pitch: 'You can roam anywhere on the map, accepting missions from the rival factions that are otherwise engaged blowing the place up, there's a bit of humour, you can steal cars/tanks etc, there's loads of weaponry to choose from (including air/artillery strikes), non-linear, freedom, blah blah.' Fantastic. I'll have some of that. However, it's all rather shoddy. The map is tiny (have the developers not played San Andreas?) and consists mainly of roads winding through largely inaccessible countryside (lots of vertical mountains in S Korea, are there?) The graphics are appalling - true, the vehicles, people and the explosions are done pretty well - but the landscape would look bad on a PS1 game. Straight lines and edges where there should be rolling hills and the towns look like they've spent five minutes designing them. And the load times are the worst I've encountered. This was such a wasted opportunity - imagine San Andreas as a warzone! And what we get is this effort. Should really be two stars but it got one extra for the idea. |
