Review: Well, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is finally here on the Sony PlayStation 2. So what's it like? I will give you my first impressions as I've only had the damn thing for a day! Upon starting the game, you are presented with the Konami logo and the title screen, all nice so far. Then after selecting 'New Game' a frankly awesome cut scene begins that seems to last for three hours. I watched it all, and prepared to begin playing... WHAT'S HAPPENED?! Taking control of Snake, I felt I'd been catapulted back to the PSOne days! The frame rate was horrific, and not at all what I was expecting. Had Konami really rushed this, the latest in their most successful game franchise ever? About an hour later, however, proved this was no rush job. Forgetting about the slow animation, I was absorbed in and couldn't stop playing! The fact is, as much as I love the little black box, PlayStation 2 is OLD TECHNOLOGY, developed and designed at the end of the last century. Coping with a game such as this squeezes every last drop of graphical power out of it. Don't get me wrong, the water and grass effects are impressive, but this slows the game down so much it spoils the experience. The game itself is great, but I can't help thinking it would've much better suited the Xbox, or the PlayStation 3. It happened to PSOne in 2000, and I think this will be the year when the PS2 will really start to show its age... |
