Review: Jacques Tati was quoted as having stated that his comedy came from his feet. I remember thinking that I had never heard such nonsense in my life and wanted to see how this could be possible. I watched this film and Mon Oncle and was astounded, that by focussing on watching only Tati's legs, his great comic genius shone through and influenced the rest of his body. Tati is in the great acting line of the Slap-stick entertainers of Chaplin down to Commedia Dell' Arte and the Atellan Farces of Rome. His comedy is so internalised at times that you feel the frustration of so much going on about him and yet he glides (or lurches!) into modern society like a swan, albeit a long legged one. Treat yourself....see a genius at work!
