Review: I bought this My Fair Lady DVD having read the recommendations of other reviewers, but honestly, I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. First of all, the movie is spiced up with a lot of wonderful songs, which are a true pleasure to hear and which have stayed with me days after watching the movie. Audrey Hepburn is delightful as Eliza Doolittle, as she struggles with those tongue-twisters in an effort to learn standard English pronunciation. Professor Higgins's unconsciously developing attachment to Eliza is very subtly drawn. I also think the issue of what constitutes correct pronunciation is still a relevant one today, and not only for the United Kingdom. I have read somewhere that this film, no matter how enjoyable, deals with a somewhat outdated issue. I do not accept this opinion. Produced in 1964, "My fair lady" may not make an explicit statement on political correctness, but I believe it does raise questions regarding our attitudes towards language and social status, and towards insiders and outsiders in a culture. In sum, I highly and warmly recommend this DVD, I enjoyed it greatly and I believe so will you! |
