Review: This Navman ICN-510 in car gps navigation system has so much going for it, it is a shame that the navigation lets it down.
The great bits are the neat design. The sharp display. The touch screen. The adjustable angle of the 3D mapping. The rechargable internal battery along with the slim profile making it a true hand held device. You can whip it out of the cradle and take it with you without any inconvenience.
It always picks up the satellites very quickly for me, unless you are impatient and start driving first, in which case, you can forget it until you come to a standstill, or get a very clear view of the sky. The software has never frozen.
The mapping is very comprehensive with even the smallest track included and, I think, therein lies its problems, as all this stuff has got to fit onto a 128meg SD card. I live on an A road that goes directly to Glasgow, but the unit has a mental block about the "speed" of this road and will take me on any possible diversion to avoid it, some of them up to an extra 10 miles. This is true of a number of roads up here. You can fool it by changing the setting to "shortest" rather than "quickest", but then it can start taking you down unmade farm tracks. This can be true of many similar units, but this one seems to do it worse than, say, the Tom-Tom.
