Review Summary: Please try harder, Nokia

Review: The Nokia 5140 mobile phone works OK as a phone - which it should at that price! The extra features that contribute to the price are less satisfactory, with patchy performance.
The Thermometer works fine, with accuracy that matches our other thermometers, and the sound meter provides a useful display of peak and instantaneous level (did not calibrate it).
The compass is really pretty, and not much use for anything else. You must watch the tiny little bubble level to use the compass, since any tilt at all will cause the apparent direction to change. Not good. Walking along with your attention divided between the spirit level and the compass display is hazardous! I felt the need for someone to steer me around the trees, boggy bits and cow pats...
One reason for buying this 'phone was the GPS cover option (CC-70D, available from Amazon) but this sadly turned out less than successfully for us.
The 5140 is seemingly tougher than most Nokias - case is good material, and the keyboard easily replaced, but it is only showerproof, not waterproof, and I would be very careful around salt water since (like most phones) the little chassis would probably suffer if salty moisture got inside the cover.
The flashlight is great in emergencies, as is the stereo FM radio. What use the "Fitness Coach" software might be I have no idea.
The installed game seems designed to destroy the keyboard, although that does look pretty tough, and you can allegedly download more Java software to the machine, although we have yet to try that.
Display is OK with the backlight on, sound quality fine, all the usual Ringtone and Wallpaper tat is available for a fee, or you can roll your own if you know how. Pretty easy.
The free Nokia PC Suite software would be more useful if we could get it to recognise the phone and talk to it, so we tried the MobileAction PC suite, which worked first time, but seems to lack a Java installer? Pity. Still,we managed to do our own wallpaper that did not obscure the display functions in a minute or ten, and backed up all the 'phone data onto the PC.
It would get a higher rating at a lower price. Although content with the 'phone, it does not quite delight.
