Review: The Olympus E500 digital SLR camera is currently the only professional grade 'four thirds' camera system available. The 'pro-grade' lenses (dust and humidity sealed, fast apertures with ED-glass) are superb, easily as good as their venerable OM-system ancestors. This kit from Amazon is a great deal if you looking to get started. The basic 14-45mm lens is more than adequate for most users or as a light and easy to carry back-up. The Sigma 50-200mm that is also included (not at all clear from the Amazon description) is light, compact and also surprisingly good, though not a patch on the fast 'pro' 50-200 2.8/3.5 ED Zuiko. The camera itself performs very well (but DO get the viewfinder magnifier), especially in RAW mode. Images are accurate and with great dynamic range. Budget for some fast storage - you get approximately 74 typical RAW images per Gb. The LCD is bright, contrasty and sharp. The camera has a vast choice of set-up options, but can also be used on full 'auto pilot' by beginners. Highly recommended. The light weight and small size of even the 'fast' lenses and built-in dust cleaning system is ideal for travel and wildlife photographers. |
