Review Summary: Extended play format and progressive scan

Review: This Panasonic DMR E55EBS DVD recorder really is a great machine and the flexibility of the RAM format makes you wonder how you ever managed with VHS. just one thing though; don't bother with the extended play if you have a large screen TV. The picture quality is not really watchable and it is particularly blocky on areas of single colour (sky etc). Recording quality is great on 2hrs and perfectly fine on 4 hrs though so should be okay for most programmes. Flexible recording is good too although as I am still new to the player a little difficult to work out how to use it.

Connecting using component leads and optical output to a surround amp gets the most out of this machine and watching films is a joy both visually and in full surround audio. A word of warning on progressive scan though, this particular machine only supports progressive scan on plasma and LCD TVs so if you have a CRT TV that supports progressive scan then this machine is not for you. If you have a plasma though and some good audio kit then buy this DVD recorder, it's great value and means you can bin the VHS.
