Review: Just got one of these Philips DVDR70 multi-region capable DVD recorders today. It was a toss-up between this and the Panasonic. Ok, with the Panny you can record whilst watching and do more editing but it was the compatibility which pushed me to Philips. With this, the rewriteable discs can be played on virtually any DVD ( they cannot with the Panasonic- only the write once discs can play on normal DVD machines). This means I can record, then watch my recording on my DVD in the bedroom.
The machine looks lovely; quite wide but slim with a mirrored DVD tray. A big red circle lights up when burning which looks cool.
The quality of recordings is indistinguishable from the source ( I have only used the 2 hour mode so far.) It is rare that a piece of technology amazes you, but I genuinely thought this was the dogs B******s when I first used it.I forget I am watching something recorded!
Somebody told me the old Philips recorders were unreliable and kept breaking down, but it seems they have the problems sorted out with this new model.
On the downside, the instruction book is crap. I think I have now worked out that if you select a menu picture to record over ( all recordings are shown in Thumbnail picture format in the menu, so you go onto one, press record and it records from that point, wiping off that one and all following recordings), the one you are recording over does not automatically wipe off- only when the disc fills up. Nowhere does it detail this in the instructions.
Get one- you will not regret it.
