Review: The Philips DVDR890 DVD recorder is an excellent device for recording from any TV channel, even those with poor quality will record acceptably with minimal quality loss. The manual that comes with the recorder is very explanatory and explains everything fully. The timer record function is very reliable and easy to use. The recorder has many different connections including S-Video, two SCART connectors, digital surround output and component video. On the front there is a small connector for I.Link devices and a further S-Video and component video interface. The ability to edit discs is easy but also slow and when recording discs with a high-quality it takes the recorder a long while after stopping to finish writing the disc. The discs that the player can write (DVD+R and DVD+RW) seem to play in most DVD devices except some models not specifically designed for DVD playback (a surround sound decoder with built-in player). The remote control has all the standard buttons you would have expected from a VCR remote and also includes several others for controlling your TV. There are standard DVD player buttons also included for example, the navigation (left, right, up, down) buttons. The setup of the player when it's first switched on is quite hard to understand. You should make sure that you have all connections exactly as they should be before doing a factory default installation (turning it on for the first time or instructing it to do so) The player will find the channels on your TV aerial, your digital decoders and any other devices that are online and even allocate them with proper names and numbers. The downside of the machine is its failure to record to DVD-R and DVD-RW. Despite the precision and quality of video compression, it doesn't play discs as wildly as most other players. For example, instead of reading discs as a computer would they all need to be standardised disc formats (MP3, CDA, VCD, SVCD). |
