Review: As the title says, for the money, I think this Philips PET 700 portable DVD player is an excellent product. I only bought it today but I've been very pleasantly surprised by the quality.

I paid ?199.99 and for that you get the player, a rechargeable battery, credit card sized remote control, audio to TV leads, AC adaptor, Cigarette socket adaptor and a carry case that doubles as a car holder.

It IS plastic but it's not flimsy at all, even the tray door feels substantial. As with all these portable DVD players, the battery is quite heavy but not excessively and it claims a 3 hour battery life, although I haven't had chance to confirm that yet. It slots easily on to the back of the player and is not as bulky as some. Picture quality is adjustable via menus although I've found the picture fine as it is out of the box. Viewing angle seems fine too, some players have a very small area from which the screen is easily viewable but this has no such problem. It's also multiregion capable via a hack easily found online. I'm also very pleased with the speaker quality, another normally poor part. They're not brilliant of course as they're so small but they're OK on everything except big bass.

I've played a couple of DVD-R backups on it and they've played fine. It also says in the handbook that it plays DVD+R so either format should be fine. Handbook is sufficient, not big and not small but straightforward.

Two headphone sockets are a boon, saves getting an extra splitter for two kids. Has the usual outputs to feed to a TV and everything is easy to get to.

If I had to make one criticism it would be that the case could be just that bit larger. I'd like to keep all the leads in the case with the player and it can be done but it's a tight squeeze. Bag has pocket underneath too but it isn't a separate pocket, it goes into a space under the player support and eats into the main space above. When the player is in the bag it's awkward to get to the power and volume controls too, but I'm being picky here.

Overall, at around ?200, I haven't seen or read of a better choice of 7" portable widescreen player. There are similar units on the market at the moment, but not brand names like this and not as classy looking. Go for this Philips PET 700 portable DVD player and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
