Review: I was very kindly bought this Pure Digital Evoke 2 DAB radio by my mum for Christmas, and I am absolutely amazed with DAB in general and this radio in particular. DAB offers crystal clear audio with no crackles and hisses which are the bane of conventional FM radio reception, and easy auto-tuning of stations. Most stations seem to broadcast in 128 kBit/s, which is near-CD sound quality, but some, such as radio 3 broadcast in 192 kBit/s which sounds amazing. The Pure Evoke 2 digital radio is an exceptional piece of kit. First impressions are good, with the unit being stylishly clad in maplewood with a silver front panal and stereo speakers. All controls are easily accessible on the front panel, with the back panel providing line out, optical out and headphone connections. Power is taken care of by mains DC transformer or by batteries, making it a truly portable solution. Switch it on, and the unit automatically tunes itself to all the stations available in your area. This was a quick and painless process, and the sensitivity of reception seemed very good indeed. Once tuned in, it is time to be blown away by the exceptional sound quality emanating from the stereo speakers. It may only be a small box, but the sound is rich and detailed. Even more wonderful is the ability to link it up to a stereo system via either the analogue line-out or optical TOSlink outputs. Superlatives abound. Overall, this is a fantatsic product and one that will surely help popularise the DAB format. Go on, time to give that old FM radio a rest. |
