Review: In the past week, I have had to retire my ageing MZ-N707. It has been a trusty machine, travelling to the US and Australia with me on many occasions. It's battery (when a normal rechargeable was used as opposed to Sony's own rechargeable) giving me very good playback time, 20-30 hours standard. It had eventually taken a battering and it's front came loose (although still capable of playing music) After a few days of looking, I ended up on the Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD Walkman. Not too expensive, but still a decent feature packed machine, with this very interesting sounding Hi-MD format. Yesterday I began compiling my first Hi-MD disc, managed to get 12 full cd's on there, totalling around about 10 hours of music. All in, 700mb. I haven't played around with anything as yet, but am sure with Sonicstage and the right amount of knowledge I will be able to get the quoted 45 cd's on there. Although I can't claim for the battery life yet, I can say that the additional dry battery unit for attaching a AA as a backup is a most helpful addition. This is one very impressive piece of kit, although it doesn't have the build quality of the machine it replaces, it is lighter and has all the features I need (possibly some I could do without, I won't use it to record too often). That's what is important, the features I need. The sound quality is excellent, the supplied earphones as always good enough for the average user. I will probably use the Remote Commander from my N707 as it has an LCD display, and I have got used to navigating and volume control. But the supplied commander is quite easy to use, and allows you to skip music folders. If you organise your music well enough on the discs, this is helpful. |
