Review: Undoubtably one of the finest SF films of the 1950s, and one of the very small amouunt that has a message. The message is to stop meddling with Atomic Bombs and fighting wars or face destruction from elsewhere - this could be very apt to todays situation with Iraq. There are obvious religious undertones here too, such as the ressurection of Christ, when Klaatu is brought back from the dead by his robot bodyguard Gort. The direction is well paced and makes for a tight film that doesn't feel overlong as some SF films of this period do. The disc is in great shape with sharp picture and sound, obviously due to the remastering job.The SPFX are great for the era also. The extras are good, including commentary from director Robert Wise. There is the usual material plus an interesting news reel from when the film first opened in the US. A great little disc that does this classic justice, definately one to own. |
