Review: The Toshiba 28yt56 widescreen TV represents excellent value for money. The vibrancy of colour really impresses with little bleed and lots of crisp detail. I was very pleased with the inbuilt digital tuner which knocks the socks off my old goodmans set top box in terms of picture quality and features. You can edit the channel list by rearanging and deleting while the digital text, although not the fastest is perfectly adequate and certainly quicker than my old box. Software upadates can be automatic or manual meaning the set doesn't have to be left on standby overnight. 2 common interface slots at the back provide digital subscription options. It also has a selectable second scart(non-RGB) allowing you to record from the tv's digital tuner or output signals from the first scart(RGB). Recordings can be set through the EPG which is both informative(fills the channel program info quickly) and easy to use. 5 different picture formats are available(4;3,wide,cinema,subtitle and superlive), covering most bases and the auto detection in digital is near flawless but you will need to manually toggle in analogue and DVD. The sound is clear with plenty of bass(booster on) and no distortion although lacks the spaciousness of dolby virtual. The only moderate criticism preventing 5 stars is the geometry which is a little suspect with slight flaring towards the top(in 4:3 side bars and OSD menu) and stretching towards the sides. To be fair though this is only noticeable in scrolling text and panning shots but if you have a fetish for perfect geometry this may be an issue. However, overall I am delighted with the tv and together with a modern design and the solid, cavernous stand(I recommend that the toshiba stand is used as screws prevent the tv from tipping forward accidently),the toshiba 28yt56 ticks pretty much every box. NB.I purchased the 28yt56 through amazon from and while the delivery went smoothly the tv did come with the matching stand which was a pleasant suprise as amazon said the stand was optional, so be careful not to order 2 stands. |
