Review Summary: Great camera and better than the Ixus 900 Ti

Review: I bought this Canon IXUS 850IS camera after much searching for a replacement for my trusty Sony DSC P1 (it was time to upgrade after being in operation for about 6 years). Anyway I was very tempted to go for the top of the range Ixus 900 Ti but opted for the 850 IS instead due to the image stabilisation and wider angle lense. I've used it for 3 weeks now having just come back from holiday in Egypt so I've taken a good 400 photos and I am very pleased with the results.

Importantly I also had the chance to compare the 850 and 900 closely as a friend had just bought the 900. All I can say is that although the 900 is a lovely camera and it has an all metal enclosure unlike the 850 which only has a metal back (my 850 already has some minor scratching on the front cover even though I took great care to always put it away in its case after use), and a touch sensitive navigation wheel, I didn't like the build quality of the battery/SD eject flap - crucially this is where you rest your right thumb when pointing the camera. This isn't a problem on the 850 as it has a different and more solid design. I also preferred the slender size of the 850 compared to the 900.

Overall I'm thoroughly happy with the 850. It's a great camera with great features. Make sure you buy a case and a 2GB SD card.
